Extractions

Post-Extraction Care: Tooth Removal

Following a tooth extraction, proper care is essential for clot formation, healing, and minimizing discomfort. Please follow these instructions carefully:

Immediate Post-Extraction Care

Apply pressure to the extraction site by biting firmly on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the appointment. If bleeding or oozing continues, replace the gauze and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. Repeat as needed to control bleeding.

Preventing Clot Dislodgement

Avoid disturbing or dislodging the blood clot. Do not rinse vigorously, use straws, smoke, consume alcohol, or brush teeth near the extraction site for 72 hours. These actions can disrupt the clot and impede healing. Limit strenuous activity for 24 hours to prevent increased blood pressure and bleeding.

Managing Pain and Swelling

Expect some pain and swelling after the extraction. Apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas/corn to the affected area to minimize swelling. Take prescribed pain medication as directed. Swelling typically subsides after 48 hours. Contact our office if pain medication is ineffective or if you experience persistent swelling.

Medication and Diet

If antibiotics are prescribed, complete the full course even if symptoms improve. Maintain adequate hydration and consume nutritious, soft foods on the day of extraction. Resume a normal diet when comfortable.

Resuming Oral Hygiene

After 24 hours, resume your regular dental hygiene routine, including brushing and flossing at least once daily. This promotes healing and maintains oral cleanliness.

Recovery and Follow-Up

You should feel better within a few days and can resume normal activities. Contact our office immediately at 530-345-7127 if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, continued swelling for 2-3 days, or an adverse reaction to medication.
