Multiple Extractions

Post-Operative Care: Multiple Teeth Removal

Following the removal of multiple teeth, it's essential to adhere to these instructions to ensure proper healing and minimize complications:

Managing Bleeding

Expect some bleeding. If bleeding occurs, apply a gauze pad directly over the socket and bite down for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, bite on a moistened black tea bag for 30 minutes. Avoid hot liquids, exercise, and keep your head elevated. If bleeding continues, contact our office immediately. Do not remove immediate dentures unless bleeding is severe; some oozing is normal.

Controlling Swelling

Apply ice packs to the cheek near the surgical site for the first 36 hours, continuously while awake.

Pain Management

For mild discomfort, take aspirin, Tylenol, or similar medication (two tablets every 3-4 hours). Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) can also be taken (two to three tablets every 3-4 hours). For severe pain, use prescribed medication. If pain doesn't subside after 2 days or increases, contact our office. Complete any prescribed antibiotics unless you have an allergic reaction.

Hydration and Diet

Drink plenty of fluids, especially after multiple extractions. Aim for at least six glasses of liquid on the first day. Do not rinse your mouth on the first day or while bleeding. After the first day, rinse with warm salt water (one teaspoon salt in one cup warm water) every 4 hours and after meals. If you have dentures, remove and rinse them 3-4 times daily after your dentist's adjustment. Stick to liquids and soft foods until comfortable, then gradually return to your normal diet.

Normal Post-Operative Conditions

Multiple extractions require bone shaping, leading to several normal conditions:

  • Swelling will peak in two days. Apply moist warm towels after 36 hours to reduce discoloration.
  • A sore throat may occur due to muscle swelling, subsiding in 2-3 days.
  • Cracked and dry mouth corners are common; use Vaseline.
  • A slight temperature elevation is normal for 24-48 hours. Contact us if it persists.
  • Immediate dentures may cause sore spots; see your dentist for adjustments within 24-48 hours to prevent severe sores and prolonged healing.
