Following the removal of multiple teeth, it's essential to adhere to these instructions to ensure proper healing and minimize complications:
Expect some bleeding. If bleeding occurs, apply a gauze pad directly over the socket and bite down for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, bite on a moistened black tea bag for 30 minutes. Avoid hot liquids, exercise, and keep your head elevated. If bleeding continues, contact our office immediately. Do not remove immediate dentures unless bleeding is severe; some oozing is normal.
Apply ice packs to the cheek near the surgical site for the first 36 hours, continuously while awake.
For mild discomfort, take aspirin, Tylenol, or similar medication (two tablets every 3-4 hours). Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) can also be taken (two to three tablets every 3-4 hours). For severe pain, use prescribed medication. If pain doesn't subside after 2 days or increases, contact our office. Complete any prescribed antibiotics unless you have an allergic reaction.
Drink plenty of fluids, especially after multiple extractions. Aim for at least six glasses of liquid on the first day. Do not rinse your mouth on the first day or while bleeding. After the first day, rinse with warm salt water (one teaspoon salt in one cup warm water) every 4 hours and after meals.
